MOVIE : "X-MEN : THE LAST STAND"

@@1/2

Team America: World Police (2004) Poster

Okay, I never really read the X-Men comic books... but I really really enjoyed the 1st two films. But this time around, I did not really have such a good time. The special effects were cool but that's about it. The storyline was not that great. They kept bringing characters in for two seconds... and there also lots of cheezy moments and cheezy one-liners. In brief, pretty disapointing.

MOVIE : "MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE III"

@@@1/2

Team America: World Police (2004) Poster

This film didn't do as well as predicted at the Box Office but in my opinion it was better than the 2nd Mission:Impossible film. The first one remains the best and a classic of the genre. This third installment is extremely action-packed and also features a great cast. JJ Abrams (creator of Felicity, Alias and Lost) directs this time around and does a good job. The film ends up being a mix of the first two films and the tv show "Alias". Perfect summer blockbuster, will keep you on the edge of your seat.

MOVIE : "LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN"

Team America: World Police (2004) Poster

This is a fun and great-looking film with a great cast. Josh Hartnett plays Slevin, a guy who is in the wrong place at the wrong time. This crime thriller got a little slow near the 2/3rds of the film but was worth the wait.... the twist are pretty ingenuous. This film had the potential to be incredible but ends up being "very good". Lucy Liu is also very entertaining, playing Hartnett's neighboor and love interest.

CD : "RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - Stadium Arcadium"

@@@@

Team America: World Police (2004) Poster

As a huge Red Hot Chili Pepers fan, my expectations for this Cd were insanely high and I must admit I was slightly disapointed. Don't get me wrong, this is still an excellent double-disc (I did give it a @@@@ rating!). With 28 new tracks including "Dani California", the addictive first single, this new record doesn't really bring anything new to the table. You will hear sounds that will remind you of "Californiacation", of "By the Way", of "Blood Sugar Sex Magic", etc. Kiedis's vocals are at its best and the more I listen to these 2 cds, the more they grow on me.

CD "WOLFMOTHER"

If you haven't heard of "Wolfmother" yet, now is the time. There is some much buzz surrounding this young Australian power trio's debut CD. Their music is intoxicating with marvelous guitar riffs, massive bass lines and the wailing of singer Andrew Stockdale. The first single "Woman" will stick in your head. Their music sounds straight out of the 70's and will remind you of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath (especially on a track called "Dimension"). Can't wait to see what these guys will have in store for us next.

CD : "EAGLES OF DEATH METAL - Death By Sexy"

Eagles of Death Metal is Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme's side project (where he drums) with his friend Jesse Hughes in charge of vocals. This is their second release (following their debut "Peace Love Death Metal" released in 2004. This dynamic duo brings something crazy, raw, fun and also sleazy to the table with fun/silly songs like "Cherry Cola" and "I Want You So Hard (Boy's Bad News)". This is one hell of a rock n' roll cd. Put on your dancing shoes! :)

CD : "THE RACONTEURS - Broken Boy Soldiers"

@@@@

Team America: World Police (2004) Poster

The Raconteurs are a new band made up of old friends including Jack White from the White Stripes. The first single "Steady as she Goes" is awesome. The rest of the record is pretty incredible too, what a fantastic debut from this band... I always liked The White Stripes but this is far better stuff in my opinion. The one down side is that the Cd is very short with only 10 tracks. While listening to the Cd, you might, at times, feel like you're listening to an old band like Led Zeppelin. You should definitely check this CD out!

CD : "THE STILLS - Without Feathers"

This Montreal band released their first CD "Logic Will Break Your Heart" back in 2003. The result was pretty outstanding, a fresh sound, some catchy lyrics. I was looking forward to the 2nd CD quite a bit and I must admit I was disapointed with the result. The first single "In The Beginning" is one of the strongest songs on the record. This new album is very different from the 1st. The reviews for this one have been great but I don't really agree. After seeing them live a week ago, the album is slowly growing on me but still nowhere near the 1st record.

MOVIE : "HARD CANDY"

@@@1/2

Team America: World Police (2004) Poster

Here's another very weird and intense film. It tells the story of a 14 yearl old who pretends to be interested in a 30-something pedophile to eventually tie him up and torture him. This whole film works because of the breakthrough performance from Ellen Page (who will also star in X-MEN THE LAST STAND this summer), she is outstanding. Warning : The subject matter and some of the scenes might be a little rough for some people to sit through. (Now Playing at Paramount Montreal)

MOVIE : "BRICK"

This first time I watched the preview for this film, I knew this would be a very original and cool indie film. I couldn't wait to see it. I definitely wasn't disapointed. The directing is very interesting. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (from Third Rock From The Sun) plays the main role and tries to find out what hapenned to his missing ex-girlfriend. The dialogue in this movie can be hard to follow, often sounding like weird poetry but is so interesting. (Now Playing at AMC Forum 22).

CD : "PEARL JAM - Pearl Jam"

@@@

Team America: World Police (2004) Poster

This is the first Pearl Jam CD since 2000. The first single "World Wide Suicide" is definitely the best one they have had in quite a while, back to their rock roots... enough ballads. Their sound on this CD sounds more fresh than their last few CDs even if it will remind you of their first 3 CDs... the ones that made them superstars. Pretty good CD overall, but nothing extremely exciting or new.
